Comparative Studies on Respiration. Xv. the Effect of Bile Salts and of Saponin upon Respiration. by Matilda Moldenhauer Brooks

چکیده
I t was pointed out by Osterhout I that substances which increase the electrical conductivity of tissues are antagonized by those which decrease it. An illustration of this is seen in antagonism between NaC1 (which increases conductivity) and Na taurocholate ~ (which decreases it). This case has additional interest as an example of antagonism between anions as well as of antagonism between organic and inorganic substances. The experiments on electrical conductivity indicated that Na taurocholate acts like CaCI~ in decreasing conductivity and in antagonizing NaC1. Whether this similarity would be found if other criteria were used remained an open question. The experiments of the writer 3 showed that, when respiration is employed as a criterion, CaCI~ antagonized NaC1. Similar results were obtained by Gustafson. 4 In view of this it became especially interesting to study the behavior of tissues under the influence of Na taurocholate. In the experiments which were made for this purpose the organism studied was Bacillus subtills and the technique was similar to that described in previous papers3 The results are shown in the figures. F i g . 1 shows the effects of sodium taurocholate (0.0000125, 0.000015, 0.001,0.0025, and 0.01 M) upon the rate of respiration (expressed as per cent of the normal rate). This organic salt is similar in its

متن کاملComparative Studies on Respiration
1. In relatively low concentrations of NaCl, KCl, and CaCl(2) the rate of respiration of Bacillus subtilis remains fairly constant for a period of several hours, while in the higher concentrations, there is a gradual decrease in the rate. 2. NaCl and KCl increase the rate of respiration of Bacillus subtilis somewhat at concentrations of 0.15 M and 0.2 M respectively; in sufficiently high concen...
متن کاملComparative Studies on Respiration. Iii. the Effect of Ether on the Respiration and Growth of Bacillus Subtilis. by Matilda
Although so much stress is laid on the physiological reactions of bacteria in their identification and classification, little investigation (except to distinguish aerobic from anaerobic forms) has been devoted to the fundamental process of respiration in these organisms. In order to throw some light on the nature of this process and to compare the results with those obtained with other plants a...
متن کاملThe Effect of Hemolytic Substances on White Cell Respiration
Substances such as saponin, the bile salts, etc., which produce lysis of red cells also produce cytolysis of white cells from rabbit peritoneal exudates, the arbitrary criterion of their cytolytic effect being their ability to depress the O(2) consumption of the leucocytes. The amount of cytolysis increases regularly as the amount of the added lysin is increased, and sufficiently large quantiti...
متن کاملCOMPARATIVE STUDIES ON RESPIRATION. X. Toxic AND ANTAGONISTIC EFFECTS OF MAGNESIUM IN RELATION TO THE RESPIRATION OF BACILLUS SUBTILIS
The behavior of magnesium is of special interest since in studies on antagonism magnesium has been found to occupy an intermediate position between the monovalent and the bivalent metals. In many cases it can act as an antagonist to calcium as well as to sodium. As no investigations on respiration have been undertaken from this point of view, the writer has made some experiments on this subject...
